Multi-Platinum Songwriter Christa Black Reveals Roadmap to Self-Esteem Recovery In New Book
"'God Loves Ugly' is a song that changed my life and self-esteem, and now 'God Loves Ugly' is a book that inspired my heart," said Jordin Sparks, American Idol winner
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 4, 2012—Whether performing on-stage with the Jonas Brothers for millions of adoring fans or alone, studying her reflection in the bathroom mirror, singer/songwriter Christa Black has finally discovered how to be simply "enough"-overcoming years of self-hatred, negative self-talk and destructive behavior. Revealing her raw testimony of recovery from a smorgasbord of issues that plague many women today, including anorexia, bulimia, suicidal thoughts, and sexual abuse, Black lays bare her past struggles in the new book God Loves Ugly& Love Makes Beautiful (ISBN: 978-1455516599, September 4, 2012, FaithWords, $19.99), so that women everywhere can find the same freedom she has now embraced.
The root is the problem. Your behavior will change when the root is removed."
Christa Black, God Loves Ugly
"For many years I would have told you the worst problem in life was my eating disorder, or low self-esteem - my addictions or my depression," writes Black. "But I'm able to see now that those were all just symptoms of a love-deficiency. I had no idea how to love myself. I wanted others to love me, to accept me, to esteem me, but I didn’t love, accept, or esteem myself. In fact, I absolutely hated myself."
Sharing tools used to combat negative self-image that holds so many in bondage, Black writes that the chains are heavy - an average person thinks 1,500 unconscious words per minute, and 80 percent of those words are negative - but that freedom can be found no matter the addiction or issue.
In the book, Black expands on the theme from her popular song recorded by Jordin Sparks entitled "God Loves Ugly" and leads readers through simple exercises to discover and affirm what is true, reject what is false, and most of all, to discover their true identity in who God made them to be - the same journey that changed her life.
"I was a victim of circumstances that led to limitations in my mind for most of my life, even though on the outside I was richly blessed, compared to most," writes Black. "I believed in my limitations more than I believed in my potential. But in order to ever change anything, I had to change what I believed. I had to change my perspective and contend to change my mind."
Black finally had a break-through moment when she discovered God truly loved her in a "lightning bolt"-type experience. She gives readers steps to discover this experience for themselves. "You are a powerful being. You probably have no idea the power you possess inside that heart of yours. You have the power to start changing everything at this very moment - regardless of how you feel about yourself."
