Cry of the Orphan Fact Sheet
What is Cry of the Orphan?
Cry of the Orphan is an annual campaign designed to raise awareness and prompt action to help the more than 140 million orphans worldwide.
CryoftheOrphan.org is designed to generate interest and excitement about caring for orphans, and offers resources to help people navigate through the process of orphan care, adoption and foster care. Utilizing the resources of Hope for Orphans (a ministry of FamilyLife), Focus on the Family and Show Hope, Cry of the Orphan shares ways EVERY Christian can have an impact on the life of an orphan
Why is Cry of the Orphan important?
The United Nations reports that the number of orphans around the world waiting for help is more than 140 million - that's equivalent to the populations of Australia and Japan combined. While that is a massive number, finding ways to provide for needs of these children is not an insurmountable task. Getting Christians and churches involved is one of the keys to changing these statistics.
Who is behind Cry of the Orphan?
Recognizing the severity of today's orphan crisis is bigger than any one organization, Hope for Orphans (a ministry of FamilyLife), Focus on the Family, and Show Hope annually unite to sponsor Cry of the Orphan.
When is Cry of the Orphan?
During the months of October and November, FamilyLife Today and Focus on the Family will devote some of their daily radio broadcasts to raise awareness about orphan/foster care and adoption issues. The Cry of the Orphan campaign will also utilize the combined efforts of the Christian Alliance for Orphans and other leading Christian media ministries and advocates.
On "Orphan Sunday", November 8, thousands of people across the U.S. will gather in homes, churches, and coffee shops to discuss and pray for the needs of orphans around the world. Orphan Sunday will culminate with a live simulcast (television, satellite and web) event from Nashville featuring Grammy-winning musician Steven Curtis Chapman, Focus on the Family President Jim Daly - a former orphan himself- and FamilyLife President Dennis Rainey - an adoptive father.
